HOW TO WASH A CERAMIC-COATED OR PPF-PROTECTED VEHICLE (2 Snow Foam Method)

One of the biggest mistakes we see is not poor ceramic coating or poor Paint Protection Film (PPF)—it is poor washing.
Over the years, we have inspected thousands of vehicles, and one thing has become very clear:
Most swirl marks and fine scratches are introduced while washing the vehicle—not while driving it.
That is why Car Studios has developed a washing process designed to remove as much dirt and contamination as possible before physically touching the paintwork.
Whether your vehicle is protected with ceramic coating, graphene coating or Paint Protection Film, the basic washing principles remain the same.
This guide explains how we safely wash protected vehicles in our own studio.
QUICK MAINTENANCE WASH OR DETAILED WASH?
This guide includes two different levels of washing:
QUICK MAINTENANCE WASH
A quick maintenance wash is suitable when the vehicle has light dust, normal road grime or general weekly contamination.
The quick wash uses:
- Alpha Foam or another suitable pH-neutral snow foam
- A pressure washer
- A snow foam cannon
- A clean microfibre wash cloth or wash mitt
- A clean-water rinse bucket
- Dedicated wheel brushes if cleaning the wheels
- A drying towel or automotive drying blower
DETAILED WASH
A detailed wash is recommended when the vehicle has heavier road grime, brake dust, iron contamination or embedded contamination that cannot be removed by snow foam alone.
The detailed wash may also use:
- Alpha Fallout or a suitable pH-neutral iron remover
- Alpha Wheel & Tyre Cleaner
- Dedicated wheel and tyre brushes
- A dedicated wheel microfibre cloth or wheel wash mitt
- Soft detailing brushes
Important: Chemical decontamination products should only be used when required. Always follow the product manufacturer's directions and never allow chemicals to dry on the vehicle.
PREPARATION
Things to prepare:
- Pressure washer
- Snow foam cannon and bottle
- Alpha Foam or another suitable pH-neutral snow foam
- Premium microfibre wash cloth or wash mitt
- Bucket filled with clean water
- Soft detailing brushes
- Dedicated wheel brushes if cleaning the wheels
- Dedicated wheel microfibre cloth or wheel wash mitt
- Large automotive microfibre drying towel
- Automotive drying blower, if available
For a detailed wash, also prepare:
- Alpha Fallout or a suitable pH-neutral iron remover

Alpha Wheel & Tyre Cleaner
- Tyre brush
- Long wheel-barrel brush
- Soft wheel-face brush
Prepare all equipment before beginning. This prevents you from having to search for towels, brushes or chemicals while snow foam or cleaning products are sitting on the vehicle.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT pH-NEUTRAL AND pH-BALANCED PRODUCTS
pH-neutral and pH-balanced are not necessarily the same thing.
These terms are sometimes used interchangeably in marketing, but they can describe different product characteristics.
A product described as pH-balanced has been formulated to operate within a selected pH range. This does not automatically mean that the product is pH-neutral or suitable for every ceramic coating or PPF surface.
A genuinely pH-neutral product is generally formulated close to pH 7.
Always read the manufacturer's technical information and confirm that the product is suitable for ceramic coatings, Paint Protection Film and automotive surfaces.
Avoid household detergents and shampoos containing unnecessary waxes, sealants or harsh cleaning agents unless they have been specifically recommended for your protected vehicle.
PREPARING THE SNOW FOAM MIXTURE
For a standard 1-litre snow foam bottle:
- Add approximately two to three capfuls of Alpha Foam to the snow foam bottle.
- Fill the remainder of the bottle with clean water until it reaches approximately 1 litre.
- Gently mix the solution before use.
Normally, approximately 500 mL of prepared snow foam solution is enough to complete an average-sized vehicle.
Before applying the foam to the whole vehicle, perform a small test spray onto the ground or a small section of the car.
Check whether the foam is thick enough to cling to the surface.
If the foam appears too watery or runs away too quickly, add a small amount of additional Alpha Foam and test it again.
Important: Every snow foam cannon is designed differently. The foaming behaviour can vary depending on:
- The snow foam cannon brand and design
- The pressure washer
- The water pressure
- The water quality
- The chemical dilution ratio
- The snow foam product being used
Some systems produce very thick foam, while others produce a wetter foam. Foam thickness alone does not determine how effectively a product cleans.
STAGE ONE — PRE-WASH
This stage applies to both the quick maintenance wash and the detailed wash.
STEP 1 — CHECK THE VEHICLE AND WASHING ENVIRONMENT
Before applying any product, make sure the vehicle is cool and safe to wash.
Never wash the vehicle:
- In direct sunlight
- While the paintwork is hot
- Immediately after driving
- When cleaning products are likely to dry too quickly
Heat can cause snow foam, wheel cleaner and water to dry prematurely. This may reduce cleaning performance and increase the risk of chemical staining or water spotting.
STEP 2 — APPLY SNOW FOAM TO THE DRY VEHICLE
Apply the snow foam directly onto the dry vehicle.
One of the most common questions we receive is:
“Should I rinse the car first?”
For this method, our answer is no.
When the vehicle is dry, the snow foam can make direct contact with the dirt, road film and contamination sitting on the surface.
This allows the cleaning agents to work at their intended concentration instead of being immediately diluted by a layer of water.
Apply an even layer of snow foam over the entire vehicle.
Use enough foam to cover the surface, but avoid over-applying it.
More foam does not always mean better cleaning.
If too much foam is applied, the layer can become too heavy and slide down the panels too quickly. This reduces the amount of time the cleaning product remains in contact with the contamination.
The goal is to create a consistent blanket of foam that slowly clings to the surface.
STEP 3 — ALLOW THE SNOW FOAM TO DWELL
Allow the snow foam to dwell for approximately two to three minutes.
Never allow the snow foam to dry on the vehicle.
These few minutes are important because this is when the snow foam is actively working to:
- Soften road grime and traffic film
- Loosen dust and dirt
- Encapsulate fine debris
- Lift loose contamination away from the surface
- Reduce the amount of dirt that will later contact the wash cloth or wash mitt
The more contamination removed during the pre-wash, the less contamination remains to be dragged across the paint during the contact wash.
This is one of the most effective ways to reduce wash-induced swirl marks and fine scratches.
At Car Studios, we believe the safest wash is the one that removes as much contamination as possible before the paint is touched.
WHEEL CLEANING DURING THE FIRST SNOW FOAM STAGE
While the snow foam is dwelling on the vehicle, you can use this time to begin cleaning the wheels.
QUICK MAINTENANCE WASH
For a quick maintenance wash:
- Use a dedicated wheel brush to gently clean the wheel face.
- Use a suitable long wheel brush to reach through the spokes if required.
- Do not use excessive force.
- Rinse the wheel thoroughly.
DETAILED WASH
For wheels with heavier brake dust or iron contamination:
- Spray Alpha Fallout or a suitable pH-neutral iron remover onto one wheel.
- Allow the product to react according to its directions.
- The product may turn purple as it reacts with iron particles and brake dust.
- Use a dedicated wheel brush to gently agitate the wheel face and other contaminated areas.
- Use a long wheel-barrel brush to clean behind the spokes and inside the barrel if required.
- Rinse the wheel thoroughly before moving to the next wheel.
Important: Clean only one wheel at a time.
Do not spray all four wheels and then return to the first one unless you can safely complete the process before the product begins to dry.
Cleaning one wheel at a time gives you better control and reduces the risk of wheel-cleaning chemicals drying on the surface.
Always make sure the wheel is cool before applying any chemical product.
STEP 4 — PRESSURE RINSE
After the snow foam has completed its dwell time, rinse the entire vehicle thoroughly using a pressure washer.
Where practical, aim the pressure washer at approximately a 45-degree angle to the surface.
Rather than spraying the water randomly, imagine that the pressure washer is replacing your wash brush.
Move the water methodically across the vehicle and use the pressure to push loosened dirt and contamination away from the surface.
Always maintain a safe distance and follow the pressure washer manufacturer's recommendations.
Pay particular attention to:
- Lower doors
- Side skirts
- Areas behind the wheels
- Wheel arches
- Front bumper
- Rear bumper
- Lower guards
These areas generally collect the most road contamination.
Continue rinsing until the majority of the snow foam and loose contamination has been removed.
At this stage, a significant amount of dirt should already have been removed without physically touching the paintwork.
STAGE TWO — CONTACT WASH
Once the vehicle has been thoroughly rinsed, apply a second layer of snow foam.
At this stage, the purpose of the snow foam is different.
The second application is not only about cleaning the vehicle again.
Its main purpose is to provide a lubricating layer between the microfibre wash cloth or wash mitt and the protected surface.
Think of the foam as a slippery barrier that helps the wash media glide over the paint or PPF instead of dragging against it.
More lubrication means less friction, and less friction means a lower risk of introducing swirl marks and fine scratches.
Allow the foam to remain on the vehicle while beginning the contact wash.
As you work panel by panel, the remaining foam continues to provide lubrication for the microfibre cloth or wash mitt.
If the foam begins to thin out, slide away or no longer clings to the panel you are about to wash, stop and apply another light layer of snow foam to that area.
Never wipe a panel that has become dry or does not have sufficient lubrication.
Your wash cloth or wash mitt should glide smoothly across the surface. If it feels like it is dragging, reapply snow foam before continuing.
DETAILED WASH — SECOND-STAGE WHEEL AND TYRE CLEANING
While the second layer of snow foam remains on the vehicle, you can complete the detailed cleaning of the wheels and tyres if required.
- Spray Alpha Wheel & Tyre Cleaner onto the wheel faces and tyres.
- Use a dedicated wheel microfibre cloth or microfibre wheel mitt to clean the face of the wheel.
- Reach carefully through the spokes to remove remaining brake dust and road grime.
- Use a soft wheel brush for detailed areas.
- Use a long wheel brush for the inner wheel barrel if required.
- Use a dedicated tyre brush to clean the tyre sidewall.
- Rinse the wheel and tyre thoroughly.
Important: Never use the same microfibre cloth, wash mitt or brush on both the wheels and the vehicle's paintwork.
Wheel contamination, brake dust and road grime can be highly abrasive.
Wheel towels, wheel mitts and wheel brushes must always remain separate from the equipment used on painted or PPF-protected panels.
DIVIDE THE VEHICLE INTO THREE WASHING ZONES
Instead of washing the vehicle randomly, the Car Studios Safe Wash Method divides the car into three separate zones.
This helps reduce the transfer of contamination from dirtier areas to cleaner and more delicate surfaces.
ZONE 1 — UPPER AND CLEANER PANELS
Begin with the upper and generally cleaner areas of the vehicle.
These may include:
- Roof
- Bonnet
- Boot lid
- Upper sections of the doors
- Upper guards
- Upper sections of the front and rear bumpers
These areas are generally more exposed to sunlight and usually collect less heavy road grime than the lower panels.
Wash one panel at a time.
Using a clean premium microfibre cloth or wash mitt:
- Place the wash media gently onto the lubricated panel.
- Allow it to glide over the surface without applying unnecessary pressure.
- Do not scrub the panel.
- Avoid circular movements.
- Use controlled straight-line or cross-hatch movements.
- After completing one panel, rinse the cloth or mitt thoroughly in the clean-water bucket.
- If using a folded microfibre cloth, turn it to a clean face before moving to the next panel.
Continue until all Zone 1 panels are complete.
ZONE 2 — LOWER AND DIRTIER PANELS
Zone 2 includes the areas that generally collect the most road grime and contamination.
These may include:
- Lower doors
- Side skirts
- Wheel arches
- Lower guards
- Lower sections of the front bumper
- Lower sections of the rear bumper
- Areas directly behind the wheels
Work on one panel at a time using the same controlled method.
- Make sure the panel has sufficient snow foam and lubrication.
- Gently wipe the panel without scrubbing.
- Use no unnecessary downward pressure.
- Avoid circular movements.
- Use controlled straight-line or cross-hatch movements.
- Thoroughly rinse the wash cloth or mitt after every panel.
Important: Zone 2 is generally the dirtiest area of the vehicle.
Once you have begun washing Zone 2, do not return to Zone 1 using the same wash cloth or mitt.
Returning to the upper panels may transfer abrasive dirt from the lower areas back onto the cleaner painted surfaces.
ZONE 3 — GLASS, SUNROOF AND MIRRORS
Complete the glass areas last.
These may include:
- Windscreen
- Side windows
- Rear glass
- Sunroof or panoramic roof glass
- Side mirrors
Glass is one of the harder materials on the exterior of the vehicle and is generally less susceptible to fine wash marks than painted surfaces.
Leaving the glass until last helps ensure that the cleaner and more delicate painted areas are completed before the wash media reaches the final section.
However, the wash cloth or mitt should still be rinsed thoroughly before cleaning the glass.
FINAL RINSE
Once all three washing zones have been completed, thoroughly rinse the entire vehicle using clean water or a pressure washer.
Remove all remaining snow foam, cleaning products and soap residue.
As you rinse, observe the water behaviour across the ceramic coating or Paint Protection Film.
Water should generally bead or sheet away more easily from a properly maintained protected surface.
The final rinse is also an opportunity to inspect whether:
- Any foam remains in panel gaps
- Any areas were missed
- The hydrophobic performance appears consistent
- Any remaining contamination requires further attention
DRYING THE VEHICLE
The vehicle may now be clean, but the washing process is not complete until it has been safely dried.
Incorrect drying can introduce fine scratches in the same way as incorrect washing.
The goal is to remove the remaining water while minimising physical contact and friction.
METHOD 1 — LARGE MICROFIBRE DRYING TOWEL
Use a large, clean, high-quality automotive microfibre drying towel.
Do not use household towels, bathroom towels or dirty microfibre cloths.
- Begin at one point on the vehicle, such as the front corner of the bonnet.
- Lay the drying towel flat across the upper panel.
- Gently pull the towel across the surface using the towel's own weight.
- Avoid pressing down or rubbing backwards and forwards.
- Continue walking around the vehicle in one direction until you return to your original starting point.
- Lower the drying towel to the next level of panels.
- Walk around the vehicle again using the same method.
- Repeat this process until all sections are dry.
Working around the vehicle in consistent horizontal levels helps prevent missed panels and reduces unnecessary movement over areas that have already been dried.
If the drying towel becomes saturated, replace it with a clean, dry towel.
METHOD 2 — AUTOMOTIVE DRYING BLOWER
A dedicated automotive drying blower is one of the safest methods for drying a ceramic-coated or PPF-protected vehicle.
The blower removes water without physically touching the surface, which greatly reduces the risk of wash-induced scratching.
A dedicated automotive blower is highly recommended because it is designed specifically for vehicle drying and may include filtered or heated air.
Use the blower to remove water from:
- Painted panels
- PPF surfaces
- Side mirrors
- Door handles
- Badges and emblems
- Window trims
- Panel gaps
- Grilles
- Fuel flap
- Tailgate and boot surrounds
Removing trapped water helps prevent drips from appearing after the vehicle has been dried.
CAN I USE A GARDEN BLOWER?
A garden blower may be used, but it must be used with great care.
Many garden blowers are not fitted with a filtration system designed for automotive detailing.
The air intake may draw in:
- Dust
- Sand
- Loose dirt
- Grass
- Leaves
- Other airborne debris
The blower may then blow this contamination back onto the freshly cleaned vehicle.
If you choose to use a garden blower:
- Make sure the surrounding environment is clean and dust-free.
- Avoid using it near loose dirt, sand, grass or leaves.
- Do not place the air intake close to the ground.
- Avoid using it during windy or dusty conditions.
- Inspect and clean the blower before use.
For the safest result, Car Studios recommends using a dedicated automotive drying blower.
Important: Do not allow the vehicle to dry naturally.
Water droplets can collect minerals, dust and contamination. If those droplets are allowed to dry on the surface, they may leave visible water spots.
FINAL INSPECTION
Once the vehicle is dry, walk around it and inspect the surface from several different angles.
Check for:
- Water trapped around mirrors and badges
- Water remaining in panel gaps
- Water streaks or drips
- Missed areas
- Remaining bird droppings or bug contamination
- Remaining brake dust on the wheels
- Consistent water beading or sheeting
If you find any remaining water, remove it using a clean drying towel or automotive blower before it dries naturally.
Car Studios Tip: Drying should never be rushed. Taking a few extra minutes during the final drying and inspection can prevent water spotting, reduce wash-induced marks and help preserve the appearance of your ceramic coating or Paint Protection Film.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- Never wash a hot vehicle.
- Never wash in direct sunlight when the products may dry too quickly.
- Never allow snow foam or wheel-cleaning chemicals to dry on the surface.
- Never touch a dirty vehicle without first completing a pre-wash.
- Always use dedicated equipment for the wheels.
- Never use wheel towels or wheel brushes on the paintwork.
- Always maintain sufficient lubrication during the contact wash.
- Never scrub the paint or PPF.
- Avoid circular washing movements.
- Rinse the wash cloth or mitt after every panel.
- Always wash from the cleaner upper panels towards the dirtier lower panels.
- Never return to the upper panels after washing the lower contaminated sections with the same wash media.
- Never allow the vehicle to dry naturally.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
MAINTENANCE
After washing the ceramic-coated vehicle:
We recommend using
CFC graphene maintenance, CFC ceramic queen, or CFC glass guard to maintain your ceramic coating, and a new, clean plush Microfiber towel.
First, spray (2-3 sprays) the product on the microfiber towel,
and 1-2 mists on the panel; wipe and spread it evenly on the painted surface with a microfiber towel, flip the microfiber to the dry section, and then buff it off.
These products work as sacrificial ceramic-coating layers formulated to maintain the ceramic-coated vehicle's protection and finish quality.
These products also add gloss, sleekness, hydrophobicity, and can help combat water-spotting issues.
